A history of Shopmobility
The
concept of Shopmobility came from three disabled
men who were active in the Peterborough Disabled
Drivers Club. When they
heard about a large shopping centre development
for Peterborough they realised that this would become
a ‘no
go’ area for all with mobility difficulties
unless some form of wheelchair transport was made
available on site. As a result, various suggestions
were discussed with local authorities, and in 1979,
the first Shopmobility scheme was introduced to a
shopping park in Milton Keynes.
By 1997 there were 200 Shopmobility
schemes across the UK. In 2000, all the major Scottish
Shopmobility schemes left the National federation
of Shopmobility, and formed Shopmobility Scotland,
which Lothian Shopmobility joined in September 2001.
Lothian Shopmobility has
been providing a service for more than ten years
and aims to continue to supply, on free loan, electrically
powered wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs,
together with the provision of fully trained escorts
as required.
The Shopmobility scheme will offer a complete service from 1st November at Fort Kinnaird Shopping Park. Please feel free to pop in and discuss your requirements with one of our trained staff, and view our ranges.
